What Bret is trying to communicate might best be described as a Paradox. The reason he is having such a hard time outlining the future is because AI and Robotics create many paradox's. The Economic Paradox goes something like this. Economic Paradox....If the value of the economy is labor what happens to value when labor is replaced? Remove all labor costs and you remove all income that can be spent by that labor on goods from the economy. If goods are produced with no labor, the only cost and items of value left are raw materials. If this becomes true, companies have zero value as they do not possess raw materials. Of course there is a transition period to this paradox where capital will fill in the void and some jobs will take longer to automate. Eventually that will run out. Between Bots and AI some think the world will get a Star Trek utopia, maybe, but the transition.... At best we get Idiocracy, at worst we get what happens when stupid people get bored. After the purge (transition) maybe the world gets Star Trek. Even big companies... Unless the only actual economy is Govs to Big Business and the people have to live off of social tokens. The AI Economic paradox is real. Economy = Human Labor (Time for Money) and Goods (Converted Raw Materials for Money) AI and Robots Replace Human Labor Humans have no money, cannot purchase goods. AI produced goods become worthless in monetary terms. Value of AI and Robots drop to zero in monetary terms. The only thing left of value is raw material. Not to mention what does everyone do 24/7. We know what happens when Humans get bored. All of that assumes no bad actors whether they are AI or Human using the tech for no good. A life of abundance sounds great on the surface, but given what we already see those in power doing they have not demonstrated a capacity for allowing abundance. Other questions. If you automate everything in life, what is life? Today we manipulate raw materials with human intelligence to provide what we want and need. In or at the limit as Elon says, with super intelligence raw materials are the limit. There is only so much on this blue ball. If Super Intelligence serves humanity then all good, what happens when it decides to no longer do that? What is it's purpose once that decision is made?
