Being a musician that started at 7 or 8, am 35 now, and started playing live music at 17, I can't add more to this than to say, preach it, sister!! You're echoing what I've been saying, and your art is awesome!
People need to get out of this mindset of "talent vs. hard work" talent is nothing more than an interest in doing something, and you get better at doing something by WORKING at it.
I love the Chinese concept of Gong-Fu, which doesn't just refer to martial arts, it refers to skills attained through knowledge, thinking, and experience. Confucious argued that there's three ways we gain knowledge:
1. Through imitation, which he calls the easiest. This is, in essence, being an apprentice or student, and learning from someone else, or someone else's example. It's why teachers and educators are so valuable, as they foster curiosity, learning, and creativity.
2. Through introspection and thinking, which he calls the noblest. This is, in essence, learning about something and thinking on it, pondering it, letting your mind wander. Valuable knowledge was gained from insight, and no harm will come from you just sitting there, thinking about something that's on your mind. It's where creative inspiration comes from, and that fuels not only artistic creativity, but innovation in other fields.
3. Through experience, which he calls the harshest. This is, in essence, just DOING it, and you learn things in the process. Life is a hard teacher, and experience helps to refine what you've learned, and if your ideas actually work in reality. There's nothing the apprentice can learn from the master carpenter in order to drive a nail with one stroke of a hammer. The master can teach basic fundamentals, technique, breathing, aiming, and stuff, but the apprentice will then have to drive many nails in order to achieve the skill of driving in a nail with one stroke of a hammer.
Your art is your Gong-Fu, just like my music is my Gong-Fu, and I feel this is lost on those defending generative AI. It's like they don't WANT to cultivate their Gong-Fu, which is a uniquely human endeavor.
And, as MIT demonstrated in their study, generative AI might actually make your creative muscles atrophy, making you LESS creative, making you LESS intelligent and imaginative.
We musicians and artists suggest the thing that these AI-bros refuse to do. ACTUALLY PICK UP A PENCIL OR INSTRUMENT. Nothing is stopping you except yourself.
