I'm an illustrator—I draw on paper, with pencils & pens. This year I decided to try generating AI images, just to see what it was all about. I spent around 1 hour promoting; had the system generate many dozens of images for me. I really tried my best, rephrasing things, adding more context, details, corrections... even tricking the AI so it would stop making certain mistakes. I set the scene very precisely. The most annoying aspect was how CONFORMIST and DULL the AI was being. It was full of stereotypes and limitations. Heteronormative, gender biased, racially biased, American-centric, boring, unoriginal, NORMIE slop. The equivalent of a Sad Beige AirBnB decorated with Walmart decor. All the lame cookie-cutter conformist stuff in society that I find off-putting and actively avoid with my actual art. It was so difficult to get the AI to make something remotely close to what I would create myself. It all looked like video game art, Pixar, Disney... Very remote from my own vision. Heck, it couldn't even "understand" what "NO EYEBROWS" meant. It could NOT understand how to create a face without eyebrows, lol. I guess there aren't enough images of people without eyebrows online for the AI to use. But it did decide my character would have random teeth growing out of its face, even though I didn't ask for that. I then showed some friends like "LOL look what some AI system made for me based on my prompts". My friends were not very impressed. And why should they be? A computer generated random images while I was sitting on the toilet... WOW? AI mashed millions of images into one *FOR* me, with lukewarm results. And yet my results were generally a lot more interesting than most slop I've seen, so I can understand why AI fans think they are geniuses, but my guess is most never actually drew something good themselves, nor have favourite artists whom they admire, or they wouldn't be so impressed with their AI "creations", as it's not remotely the same process and quality as creating and appreciating a piece of artwork made by a person. A computer system made something for me, loosely based on my requests. It's not art, nor is it work. I made suggestions and was SERVED stuff that didn't come from my own brain, my own style, my own strokes, my own unique mental universe and process of translating my mind into the material world. I was given an estimation. And not a very good one at that. I never once considered it as me having MADE ART. It's nothing like when I create my own art. It's more like Googling than drawing. It's just me using a lottery algorithm, and trying to refine my search based on keywords. Promoting a system to create AI images requires about the same effort as copy pasting Google search results into a word doc, but with less precise control, and less effort.
