Why is it that whenever an artist has negative things to say about AI art lately, they tend to quickly prove that they don't understand at all how the algorithm actually works? It makes one seem foolish. Do you realize that the training data from Stable Diffusion stored around one byte on average for image it was trained on? That's less than a single pixel. There's no way your copyrightable art is contained in that single byte. It does NOT simply store scraped image bits, like you so bluntly imagine, it learns the style and nuances, and only over the course of a statistically significant number of instances. Just like you did when you learned from other artists. You are legally allowed to use Picasso's style, so should an AI. Style is not something you can copyright. If you are going to make such a long-winded presentation, why don't you even learn the tinest bit about how the diffusion model actually works? Are you afraid of what you'll discover? Plenty of artists who understand it have put this AI to work for them, and don't fear it like you do. You act like you speak for all artists, you don't. You speak for the stubborn, uneducated dinosaurs. I've been an artist longer than you have been, and I wholeheartedly welcome AI tools. It's just the Photoshop of this era. People feared Photoshop at one time too, you know. Your disinformation just muddies the waters, but it's not going to help your cause anyway, you act as though Stable Diffusion isn't already out there. Even if the company went out of business today, I still have my copy, like many other people, and it doesn't even need the internet to work, and I'll continue to use it forever. What your cause does do is make it so that open source projects run by regular people run into roadblocks when they try to train their own models, so that big companies like OpenAI and Google are going to crush the little guy, and soon they'll be gatekeepers to that power forever and the rest of us will have to pay to use it, with whatever rules they decide, which won't be ones you or I like.
