Really? You need fewer engineers to create the same product - sorry I've seen it and done it. The point is that the value of junior devs has collapsed. And indeed the value of software itself is undergoing revision. Many companies are able to build their own bespoke tools using AI. We saw something like this in the 80s with amateurs using interpreted languages to build professional software - and yes over time they became more skilled. But that skill-barrier has dropped significantly now.
There will probably be just a lot more software being created. Being able to write code will still be valuable but not as much - being able to direct AI and have some domain expertise will probably increase in value. The nature of the job will change it won't go away.
