I used to be really judgmental of people that used these platforms. Last year I went through a unexpected breakup that shook me to my core. I reached a new level of depression that I didn’t know it was possible. Like a lot of people when I initially gotten into this relationship that person became my whole world, and their friends were my friends. I was so lonely and emotional emotionally raw after the break up that I found myself for the first time strongly, consider considering making an account on one of these platforms. Ultimately, I decided against it because I knew I was in a vulnerable position and could easily become attached to an AI romantic partner or friend. But there were definitely many evenings when I would just be crying my eyes out from sadness, staring at my phone, wanting desperately to download a digital companion. I would compare it to craving an addiction. I had enough self-awareness to realize that if I started this, I would get addicted and it would be hard to break up with these digital characters. One thing I wish this special had touched on is that these type of apps only work on desperate people. Sure some of these individuals can say that they like trying new things or you have the paralegal that said she talks a lot and didn’t want to burden humans with her talking. The fact of the matter is as I watch this, the common thread was desperate people looking for companionship and validation. Whether it’s validation that they aren’t alone in the world or validation that they are acceptable beings each of these humans at their core wants someone who will emotionally pour into them with love and never rejection. Now that I’m on the other side of getting through my breakup, I’m glad that I never created an account on one of these platforms. It really gave me a whole new understanding and empathy for how some of these people end up addicted to these things.
