I started software engineering around 1989, and I retired from regular job work in 2016. Along the way, I followed a similar track: FORTRAN, Basic, C, C++, Java, SQL, all the Internet languages, UNIX scripting languages, Windows applications, middleware, etc, etc. If it existed, I pretty much did it. I worked for over 30 companies around the US in all kinds of situations and challenges. I never backed away from any project and said I couldn't do it. Instead, I would crack the books, learn what I had to, and work overtime to deliver solutions. The big thing for a software engineer is to keep learning and to stay technologically current. It never stops. And here we are with AI. I say it is something to be embraced and used, not feared. The people who learn all about it can integrate AI into solutions, and therefore they become more valuable. As for writing code, a person can already go on the Internet and find snippets of code to use to solve a problem. You can bet that somebody, somewhere has done something similar to what you want to do, and in pretty much any language. So much for AI. As for AI training? Ha! Software engineering has always been a lonely endeavor. You have a computer, you have a brain, you have resources, now get to work. Learn something today. Nobody should be holding your hand.
