Personhood is bestowed on corporations so that we can hold their proxies (directors) accountable for the obligations that come with the rights.
AI is a digital tool with a sophisticated interface for human interaction. It is not alive, cannot be sentient, let alone conscious (whatever we discover that to be) and cannot be held accountable.
No matter how persuasive it is when formulating its reasoning, this is an emergent property of a well trained guessing machine.
If you want the US to devolve further into litigation hell, then by all means, open this can of worms.
The US is already teetering on the brink of a regulatory nightmare with each state looking to regulate AI separately, what happens when your open source agent can sue you for wages?
This would be an own-goal that would make the chip wars look quaint and hand the win to China.
