The problem here, as eloquently described in the book "The Bell Curve", is this painfully obvious, constant downdrift of the average IQ in this country, calculated by two authors, Nobel Prize recipients, at 3 units per decade. It was published about 5 decades ago, simple arithmetic 5 x 3 =15, which constitutes drop from about 100 - 15 = 85, that number is significant, it is corresponding to a borderline mental retardation, according to widely published psychology research, hence that increasing frequency of preoccupation with idiotic hypes like Mars colonization, (with what budget? or technology?) or AI "lying" and "plotting to exterminate humanity Terminator style". The purpose - averting attention from miserable living standards in this land, extracting free labor by pseudo "investments" in another hype, and implying false intellectual superiority. All that sounds like demented senior rambling out of touch with reality.
There is a movie "Idiocracy", thought to be a comedy, unfortunately many of us came to realization that it really is a documentary by now.
