Inspiration is one thing but AI art is like sampling a song which you very much need permission for and usually leads to paying the origin incredible royalties.
Like how lodsofemone used a three second ABBA clip and that was still sufficient so people are actually rather protective of their own stuff long before AI art became a thing.
