Pointless question. No-one knows what it is, how to quantify it, or how to identify it in humans. What chance in an AI? Pretty much none. But so what? Two questions: 1) Is it useful? 2) Is it trustworthy? Questions we "ask" of other human beings all the time. It never occurs to us to enquire whether our mate Dave is conscious before we can make use of him. And we can largely trust him cos he's made of the same stuff as us. Job done. We can certainly make use of an entity that ISN'T made of the same stuff as us, but can we trust it? That depends on whether it's proven itself worthy of our trust and that simply takes time. This question of consciousness in an AI is a dumb one and quite frankly I'm a tad tired of hearing it... 🙄
