Being a developer myself having 15+ years of experience in the field of IT & automation, I do have some insight to offer as crux of all this AI drama -
I very well understand how much pleasure it fills us with when we see AI stumble and fall upon things that are cakewalk for us and even though it occasionally gives us deep hubris driven satisfaction to see higher management struggling with their AI projects in 2025 (those who don't even know 'P' of programming) which boastfully thought AI will replace us - Let me tell you the other side is hellbent on not accepting the defeat.
Those morons sitting on company's boards would never admit their mistake in the first place. The common folk will not stop investing in shares of these giants in the name of 'AI Boom' dreaming of making huge buck. Which means the venture capitalist will never run short of funds and will keep pouring millions and even billions into the coffers of these tech giants in the lure of stakes and equity. Which means more research in AI to overcome it's current loopholes. That will highlight new loopholes. Again board will not realize it's mistake. Again funds poured. Again more & more research.. and this will go on and on...
Until one fine day when something will happen in some part of the world that would warrant delivery of the grand promise - "Urgently" & "with no compromises made". Suddenly everybody would be clueless and would have nothing to offer except blank faces. There comes the moment where everything starts to crumble... investors want their billions back and companies not even having a penny to return. Market crashed... unemployment pervades.. hopelessness and dismay everywhere.. but sad.. neither us not those idiots who refused to learn and rectify would have their jobs intact.. there were plenty of alarm bells ringing but nobody listened to them until depression hit us in 1929... same happened in 2008... same will happen now.. they did not care then.. they do not care now..
To my fellow developers - I know it makes you pissed off to see you being forced to adopt AI in your companies.. where it takes you more than 2 hours to devise a prompt to write code which you would've written in 30 minutes on your own. First time in human history something actually dumber than you, masquerading as something smarter than you, is pointing fingers at you and you can't kick on it's butt and say f*** off to it. It's painful..
Then what to do?? - Sadly there isn't an easy answer🙂. Whatever I said above will happen but the problem is we don't know when.. may be tomorrow.. may be not in next 10 years.. so what to do until that happens..
1) Even if for the sake of optics, but at least pretend to use AI in some form or the other in your daily work.. because your company may fire you in future if their AI is successfully trained.. but it will fire you immediately if you are of no use to train it's AI model...
2) Immediately go back to basics - start acquiring skills which you don't have in a missions mode behind the curtains where your company can't see you. A different language or a framework or even a new programming paradigm. Once acquired pick another... but be sure of mastering whatever you pick...easier said than done I know.. but you'll need to diversify and solidify..
3) Educate more & more people around you about this. See I am not a Luddite who is against AI. What I am against is 'Madness and Mania' around it. Help them realize this mania so they don't blindly invest their hard earned money behind this joker circus. This will slow down the wheel to some extent if not stop it. As people enthusiastically investing in AI would drop, so would the excess liquid venture capital which is currently fueling this menace.
4) This more applies to Indians like me but start learning a foreign language other than English. There are huge landscapes where your skills command respect as well as payoff handsomely but still you only see US, Canada or UK at max simply because you know no other foreign language apart from English. Latin America, Francophone countries, Russia, Scandinavia.. the world is too big for one language English to dominate everything. I have started learning Spanish - although slowly but more importantly steadily.
I know its a long and painstaking solution, but so long is the road too... AI is not going away anytime soon... and till the time it stays it will benefit from all the chaos and become better tomorrow than yesterday.
So start investing in yourself while continuing to work in a "business as usual" way. So that once this bomb explodes and dust finally settles down - you are standing in the queue at front with right skills and experience which will be once again valued.
