I have a disability. Luckily I'm securely employed but I have many friends with disabilities who have been unemployed since the pandemic started. I totally believe this is happening. The sick and twisted irony is that applicants started using AI to mass-apply. Recruiters genuinely can't handle thousands of applications for one job. So on the surface it makes sense for them to look into automation for filtering. The problem is blindly trusting the AI, but I can honestly see the other side of the problem too: what else can an overworked overstretched recruiter do? The real people to blame here are Workday and similar apps that tout their AI recruitment services and try to hide behind technicalities even when presented with reasonable evidence of the system's bias. Companies have all reverted to the childhood idea of "deny deny deny." It would be so much better if they'd just admit yeah, maybe we have an issue and we will actually look into it and give receipts. Instead they try to wordsmith their way out of it and make it go away. That says way more about a company than many realize. The problem is Workday is one of those companies that doesn't need good reputation among employees; they're a B2B app that employees just get forced into using. So we can't even "vote with our wallets" because it isn't our wallets paying their bills. The only way I see this improving is some real regulation on how AI can and *can't* be used in hiring decisions. But that still does bring us back to what should recruiters do when faced with thousands of AI generated applicants...
