I hope everyone is actually aware that chatGPT is just a statistical model that calculates the probability of the next word given the previous words, which was trained in a way that gives the highest probabilities to words that sound the most plausible to humans. ChatGPT does not have an internal representation of truth. It apologises because that's the most likely response found in the training data and reinforced by human feedback fine tuning.
