During Covid, I left college due to the cheating epidemic and the lowering of standards. I was studying to be a engineer at the time. Almost every study group of mine disappeared because no one wanted to wear masks. Eventually I found out that the people I use to study with just used Chegg (chatgpt was around yet) and other sites with a monthly subscription and bought all the answers. Cause of covid, everything was online, including the tests, and professors almost always used the same 3-4 tests on a rotating cycle year after year. Also during that time, homework became a larger part of the grade, and you could easily find the answers to all homework problems. The killer for me was hearing from a professor that they (the profs) had to keep a B-C average or else their career would be reviewed, and because of that they had to put questions that you would not know the answer to on the test to artificially lower the grade of the class. This was right after I had a class where the prof figured out that every answer to single question on every single test and assignment was online FOR FREE because a previous year student posted them all. This was thermodynamics and not even a single value was changed. She changed the last test to be so hard that it basically knocked everyones grade down a level, including mine. I became a tutor for the college at the time too and I remember the veteran tutors commenting how few people they got nowadays to tutor. My scholarships were running out, my grades all went down by multiple levels and it was either join them or leave. So I left and I am glad I did. I was able to get a lower level engineering position in my home town that pays very well for our area. Even got a house after less than 2 years. I am very fortunate but until college embraces the internet and the ability for people to get information easily, it is a scam. I know so many people who graduated from a high ranking school as engineers who cheated entire classes. I personally think colleges need to embrace this AI and technology. Imagine if they never embraced the calculator? But until they do, and make their courses around these tools, there will be cheaters and non-cheaters, and the non-cheaters will be punished. Also college is not for everyone, yet people believe they need it. Look at me! I have a home and a family in my early 20s, and I dropped out. There are people the same age as me who never went to college and they have homes and everything. Yes, you earn more money over your life with a college education, but that statistics never shows what you loose from paying student debt off instead of putting that money into a 401k.
