I think, many of AI vs. Art discussions confuse art, content and craft. AI doesn't produce art - it generates content. And AI cannot destroy art - it devalues craft. Art cannot be destroyed by AI, because art, especially modern and even more so post-modern are not about craft, it's about stories. Nobody cares about Pollock's Number 31 because of the looks of it, but because it carries the story of post-modern art and a big shift in modern philosophy, it has a cool story (true or not) of self-doubt and raw self-expression. AI can't simulate that.
What people mean, by saying that artists are doomed, I think, is that artistic craftsmanship is under a big danger, and I absolutely agree with that. AI "art" does to visual arts now what IKEA did for furniture market - it's a cheap, mass-produced, wasteful, barely functional cardboard slop. Most of the time you hear praise for AI "art", it's about how fast, easy and cheap it is to make. These are definitions of "good" for AI -generated content, not the artistic expression
