Disabled artist here; my hands have become extremely shakey and art has become increasingly time staking and disheartening to do. It's like I have to relearn how to do everything and it takes so long to get something that's just ok. A lot of times I just don't have the energy for it. AI is completely irrelevant to "helping" me or making art "accessible" like ai bros say it is, because ai can't create my ideas. I most frequently want to draw my characters, I could generate an image and edit it but that sucks even more. I'd have to try to get a half decent result over and over again just to get something that resembles what I want, because there's no process to ai. There's no fun to ai. Ai is NOT an accessible tool for disabled artists, ai is a tool for lazy people who want a product, it is not meant for creation and it does not satisfy the urge to create. If I make something with ai, no matter how much I change it, it doesn't look like something I made or would make. I tried because people were saying it's good for disabled artists and I found it to be the opposite. Its so deeply unsatisfying and in all honesty it just made me more depressed about everything. Ai gives less satisfaction than picturing what I want in my head. Ai isn't for disabled people, it's for entitled people who are stupid on purpose. People who did nothing in group projects at school but still got credit. Ai is for people who can't do ANYTHING but require constant validation as if they are doing something. Wiping your ass takes more brain power than ai art and at least you made that shit yourself.
For me the best solution I've found to make pictures of my characters without spending weeks trying is using bases and editing picrews. I can make a picrew, color it, and add whatever details I want that were missing. What makes art difficult for me now is the time it takes. Editing a picrew cuts the time a lot, and I can finish drawing something without quitting out of frustration. When I'm done I can tell that I definitely made the end result even though it's not all my work. I've found that to be like collaborating with another artist. Like someone else helped me make something. THAT is using a tool to help you, unlike ai that vomits up a product made of millions of different works by artists who didn't agree for their work to be used in that way. As a disabled person, there's so many ways to make art and there's so many ways to make it easier and more convenient WITHOUT ai. Disabled artists that are convinced that ai is their only option are straight up not trying and they're not artists because any artist would be disappointed with ai. Ai gives you a product, not the process. The process is what makes someone an artist. Ai art is just a picture you have, like putting a filter over starry night and saying you made it. Being disabled doesn't make someone less of an ai slop dependent loser. Disabled ai artists aren't disabled artists, they're disabled tech bros. I'm tired of people acting like disabled people are smol uwu innocent babies or tragedies. It's not ableist to say disabled people shouldn't use ai, it's ableist to say thats all they can do and act like they don't know better. We aren't babies. Using disabled people to defend ai art is genuinely ableist and causes real harm to disabled people by reinforcing the idea that disabled means lesser. The whole world is harder to exist in with any disability and the little things like 'ai art lets disabled people do art which they could never do otherwise' are what make it that way.
Sorry for the whole essay, I'm just really so sick of the 'disabled people can't do it' ai art argument. If someone isn't too disabled to use ai, they're not too disabled to make art themselves.
