Just a short time ago going to college for programming was a great option with high entry level wages . I began my career as an electrician in the mid 1980s and I was part of the largest generation ( baby boomers ) in my day most did not go to college . They did blue collar work which means lots of competition for jobs which beats down wages . I barely made a livable wage as an electrician . You had to be in a union to get good wages and benefits . Today that has completely switched . I would have been better off going to college in my young adult life . Today many going to college should go to a trade school . Of course that will end with the robots taking blue collar in the future . Actually if you go to college liberal arts and critical thinking may be a better option . The problem is if you don't have entry level and start your climb up the ladder you're stuck . A lawyer fresh out of law school is not needed to do research as an example. My grandpa had no problem in the great depression . He was in a new technology. He was a projectionist for a movie theater . Now that job is basically gone through automation. This is common throughout human history . If you find the right way to earn a living in history things are good but it takes some luck. Whoever can manipulate the technology for themselves gains an advantage
