Only the N-th crisis in software development. First we had the low-wage Indian or East-European slob. Now we have low-wage AND AI slob.
I don't see much difference other than companies wanting to showboat how 'innovative' they are by laying off people this time. Layoffs are the classic American way.
I live in Europe and most European companies are more sane than American ones but it's yet another tactic to keep wages down because hey... yet another crisis!
I worked through multiple of those 'crisis' points in my career and I've never had one yearly performance review where they admitted they made a shitload of profit. The message was always 'we don't have room for raises because of X'. Only when I said to leave the company, there was room.
I'm 40 and I can say that the promised good wage of working in a bottleneck profession is a lie. It's fairly descent but by the time you are 35/36 you will have to accept that you've reached your maximum. My advice to junior software developers is to consider other professional fields.
