I am skeptical that artificial intelligence can ever become conscious and become aware of it self or have emotions or have an imagination but, I think AI is fascinating and will help humanity progress and prosper not destroy us. Ever since the industrial revolution, automation, robotics and labor saving machines have reduced the reliance on human labor on the farms, in the factories, on the construction sites and in many other areas where labor was needed. Although this has always been disruptive to working class people and to blue collar jobs, I have always considered any type of technology that can reduce human labor and repetitive tedious work as progress and a good thing. We have now progressed to the point where AI technology will be reducing the reliance on academic brain power and it looks like there will be job losses in all areas of academia including in education with teachers, professors, researchers being affected along professions such as doctors, lawyers, pilots and in many other highly skilled professions. Also in science and engineering, in medicine and heath care, in accounting and business, in arts and entertainment in banking and finance, and in many other white collar jobs including administration and management. Automation, robotics and other mechanical assisted labor technologies has made physical labor much more affordable, efficient and accessible and artificial intelligence will make intelligence and brain power much more affordable, efficient and accessible. I think this would also be a good thing. The future is always unpredictable and to me that is always fascinating. I think humans should be able to progress and adapt but there are never any guarantees and there are always unknown challenges that lie ahead. My hope is that our leaders can stop preaching and promoting nonsense and that people stop believing in nonsense and that people start to be much more truthful and honest with each other and find ways to compete for wealth, status and power in much more peaceful, fair and sustainable ways. Maybe AI can help make this happen and help humans learn how to prevent conflict and get past the hatred and the mistrust so that they do not have to spy on each other and do not have to manufacture weapons that can wipe out most of the life on this planet. Maybe AI can even help prevent humans from becoming criminals and help humans with mental health issues and help humans avoid bad habits and addictions and develop cures for cancer and other diseases.
