The problem isn´t that AI-Experts don´t know what they´re doing but the fact that there are no real Experts when it comes to consciousness. We can measure it´s effects and observe how it behaves but can´t quite tell what it actually is, apart from electricity and chemistry. Regarding the "I" - the sensation of being, we have barely progressed past Descartes´ famous "I think therefore I am". So, AI-Experts telling you with great authority that AI isn´t conscious for reasons XYZ, are making these claims without an actual point of reference. They may understand what they´re building and dealing with but they know little more about their own selves than any layman would. Which is next to nothing.
