This is like Spotify, the big famous artists heavily copyright protect their music but for most of us 98% of whats there is irrelevant to the subscriber. Many artists that are already irrelevant to most, most if not nearly all are unknown working for little commission jobs and nobody is going to steal their art because nobody knows them to put them in their prompts. There is so much public domain art in all of history and an infinite number of combinations of prompts that people will not need to use artists that could legally require thier consent. What they are really worried about is companies paying a few dollars for AI art that is better than theirs and much quicker and more precise in results because they can generate hundreds of options very quickly. II think we are worried about loosing career aspirations and work. It’s about being relevant I think. It was extremely hard to be relevant and I think AI made it almost impossible. A Jim Lee or Dave Mckean can And probably will opt out of being prompted but for most that will do that, nobody cares because they are unknown and AI has pretty much guaranteed they stay that way. Even if had strict copyright laws were in place, AI can generate infinite incredible styles outside their legal box that I thinks it’s a lost cause. The printing press, the camera, digital, have been paradigm shifts and so now is AI. Even if we got all the copyright protection and AI was all public domain generated how are you copyright the terms, “ink and watercolour “ or “anime” or “noir lighting”. With all that is available legally and ethically it would probably take thousands of AI users mere minutes to be happy with “close enough” and AI will refine that because it will have it legally in it’s data base. I could copy a artists style like Dave Mckean and say “collage with dark themes” and not mention any names and it still be close but not his, without even touching his name. I think I will try a experiment and you can too, just build your own style with no names mentioned and in minutes a new “style” is generated by tweaking, I could say no artist after 1922, public domain, and ask it for a fire breathing dragon and it still will come up with something awesome for the company or the individual AI user. All over the world AI could generate thousands of new styles to feed itself and just riff off of itself and artist would just be looking on like they are now.
