I participated in NaNoWriMo for two years as a beta editor for my friends. I did it for free because I was actually chomping at the bit to read my friends' work. There are always NUMEROUS people in the community who offer to beta read and edit works for free simply because they want to participate but either don't have the time or don't have any ideas to engage in writing that year. NaNo claiming that deriding ai is somehow classist towards people who "can't afford editors" is not only an asinine take, but shows that whoever wrote this press release has no engagement with nor knowledge of the community. Also, without going into too much detail in a youtube comment section, NaNo absolutely has a grooming problem. The moderators even participated in it. It's a shame it took them tripping over their own humongous balls to defend ai to get more people to look into their actions, but better late than never.
