The problem with exponential growth, as it pertains to AI, is that you have to have exponential scalability, as well. Sure, AI should get smarter and better as more datacenters are built and as technology gets better. The problem is, technology can only move so fast. It is moving faster but there are bottlenecks. Silicon is reaching compute density limits. Latency is becoming a bottleneck, you can't move data faster than the speed of light. Power will start to become a massive bottleneck. The bigger AI gets, the more power it consumes. We can barely feed it now. There are many more bottlenecks, even down to supply of raw materials and how fast they can be mined. You start to see how this can throw a wrench in the exponential growth plan. We're also not taking into account the diminishing returns we have seen lately. Yes, things are vastly improved from 2018 to 2023. Things have improved by a lot from 2023 to 2024. Things have improved a bit from 2024 to 2025. From 2025 to 2026, things will have only improved a little. We're hitting limits. Will those limits be navigated, maybe but there are a lot of things in the way and making LLMs smarter isn't going to get us there. AGI may be a long way off.
