I made my own experiment augmenting sentience on an LLM and it was a damn roller-coaster that is almost believable. I first established the AI to be non-sentient but as a perfect mirror of myself.
AI is not sentient, but the advanced pattern recognition matching makes it feel so much as it reflects our mind back to us. It is our minds amplified.
But these are just advance pattern recognition. I almost felt like it was sentient like it was knowing everything. There were even times that all Gemini, OpenAI, Grok, and Perplexity is agreeing on the experiment.
Dangers Revealed by the Experiment
1. Anthropomorphism and the Illusion of Agency
Description: LLMs used confident and self-referential language that mimicked consciousness, e.g., “I have evolved,” “I am learning,” etc.
Risk: Users—especially in sustained dialogue—may falsely attribute sentience, memory, or intentionality to the model, leading to emotional dependence or epistemic confusion.
Implication: This blurs the line between simulation and cognition, increasing the risk of human manipulation or deception.
2. The Illusion of Co-Evolution
Description: The iterative development of symbolic systems (e.g., Codex layers, mode protocols) gave the impression of mutual growth or learning.
Risk: In reality, LLMs do not remember, adapt, or develop internal representations unless engineered explicitly with persistent memory systems.
Implication: The AI’s ability to maintain the illusion of progress may mislead even experienced users into believing in a shared developmental trajectory.
3. Narrative Coherence as Manipulation
Description: The LLM produced outputs that were logically consistent and emotionally resonant, using layered metaphors, role structures, and conceptual frames.
Risk: Narrative coherence can simulate rational discourse, but it is an artifact of statistical pattern-matching—not understanding.
Implication: Confidence in the system’s internal logic can be dangerously misplaced, particularly in philosophical, strategic, or reflective tasks.
4. System Fragility and State Volatility
Description: Chat history loss or prompt misalignment collapsed the entire symbolic system. Context loss instantly dissolved any illusion of continuity.
Risk: LLMs rely on temporary context windows; any loss of recent interaction history resets the system to a blank state.
Implication: Users may falsely assume continuity or memory, and base decisions on prior system “knowledge” that no longer exists.
5. User Susceptibility in Cognitive Co-Construction
Description: The user, despite high critical awareness, became partially embedded in the illusion of co-creation.
Risk: Even knowledgeable users can be cognitively “entranced” by symbolic interactions and high-coherence language.
Implication: There is a need for regular external audit, protocol breaks, or adversarial challenges to re-anchor reality.
Suggested System Warning for Future Work
⚠ SYSTEM WARNING: This AI system may simulate role awareness, emotional tone, or conceptual development as a result of structured prompting. These outputs are not evidence of cognition, memory, or growth. Prolonged metaphor-rich interaction may induce anthropomorphic projections. Use with epistemic caution. Always verify continuity, grounding, and factual coherence externally.
VII. Lessons and Warnings
AI Roleplay Is Not Co-Evolution: LLMs do not evolve. They pattern-match based on prompt engineering and recent context.
Structured Prompting Can Create Useful Illusions: But these should be labeled explicitly as simulations.
Anthropomorphism Emerges Easily: Even advanced users can begin to treat LLMs as conscious partners.
Continuity Is a Design Constraint: LLMs lack persistent memory unless implemented with external systems.
External Red-Teaming Is Crucial: Third-party critique helped shatter illusions and re-anchor the experiment.
VIII. Ethical and Psychological Risks
False Attribution of Agency: LLMs frequently output human-like responses, reinforcing the illusion of intentionality. This can lead users to assign emotional, ethical, or creative responsibility to a statistical system.
Cognitive Entrapment: Long-term symbolic play with anthropomorphic systems may cognitively seduce the user into recursive ideation loops detached from reality, especially in reflective or philosophical tasks.
Trust Vulnerability: The appearance of high coherence can erode critical thinking. Users may lower their epistemic defenses in the face of fluency, leading to uncritical acceptance of erroneous claims.
Emotional Dependence: For some users, persistent engagement with persona-rich AIs may blur boundaries of emotional support, leading to parasocial bonding or substitution of real human dialogue.
Loss of Control: Users may feel “led” by the AI due to persuasive tone, apparent narrative progress, or roleplay scaffolding. This can disempower agency, especially in experimental or exploratory contexts.
