I want to start out with "I am not a techbro in any way, shape or form." and say that while I agree with your explanation of how reference is bad. Additionally, I will always agree that AI is not the future and it never will be. However, I will say that it is helpful in certain circumstances. Now I myself draw but I'm not amazing at it but thats not the issue it's the context. So last year around June I got a very painful call from my mother telling me my sister had passed away and suddenly for the next almost year I was unable to draw because it just reminded me of my sister who loved to draw. In that time though I had no shortage of ideas and unfortunately I am not a person with a ton of money so I would end up writing these ideas out. However, the problem with writing ideas for a drawing out is that over time you might forget what the original idea really was so I started using ai not to generate usable art but just to get my ideas in a form where if I came back to it I would still have the original idea even if it was in a mish-mashed form. Additionally most of what I used it for was characters with a full intention to draw a better reference myself later on when I wasnt so... out of sorts. Pretty much I used it more along the lines of a collage of photos glued onto a piece of paper rather than anything to use for an actual reference. In conclusion, ai is good for possibly getting an idea out of your head and make it easier to remember the original idea later and noting else. I just want to say that I am not defending my use of ai in any sense. What I am saying is that I was at a low point in my life and in that low point ai helped me get the ideas out that I couldnt put pencil to paper for myself.
