We used to have Morse Code operators that went away overnight as well, when we started putting in phone lines...such is life, things change, resistance is natural. My field of Telecom, then when IT took over HF comms, we all thought it was the end of our world, but instead, we learned computers and became IT...AND I'm pretty sure IT will go away when AI takes over.
