Jackson Pollock is such a great person to draw a parallel to for AI. Modern art doesn't derive its value from technical skill, people who like modern art are mostly excited about intention, process and above all else who the artist themselves is. Most people who might've liked Pollock probably feel a lot different once they learn about his history with the CIA, and it probably changes their perception in a similar way to as if someone who likes an illustration is told that illustration was AI generated. People who said they liked the Pollock piece better in the video you referenced weren't actually saying they liked the illustration itself, they were saying they liked that it was made by (what they thought was) a person. The lack of value in AI Illustrations vs something somebody illustrates themselves comes from the difference in process and history between the two. AI illustrations don't have the same amount of emotional weight to most people because of the difference in the process of its creation. Jackson Pollock doesn't have weight to people who like modern art because he was used as a thought experiment by the CIA, instead of just being a genuine weirdo trying to express himself. The fine art gallery world has often gatekept the work of illustrators with commercial backgrounds for years because of the difference in the intention of their art from "non commercial" fine artists. You could easily apply the same argument to AI art. Value doesn't come solely from what something looks like, it also often equally comes from process, history and intention. It's why someone might like a drawing their friend or kid makes much more than something that's technically better. It's why old things are usually seen as being much cooler than modern equivalents that imitate them. This was a great video, as a fellow vis dev industry burnout it was genuinely really cathartic.
