Reflection: I don’t think the spread of deepfakes can’t be stopped in this situation unless they stop internet access or closed off the country in the name of containing it, but it’s just a bandaid (and another can of worms); it wouldn’t address the root. Fear of the law and punishment might work if only the laws weren’t a joke and outdated, and just punishment for the crime was properly implemented. It’s a sad reality that majority of the offenders are minors, and would even disrespect their own family members. Not to mention that bad behavior was not only being tolerated but rewarded. I suspect that most of the governing authorities especially when overseeing sexual crimes, unless they were bribed, see themselves in these offenders and are thus lenient and don’t make a big deal out of it in some twisted sense of camaraderie. At least that’s the impression I got with such light sentences and disregard of similar cases. Values education is really needed for the young but it’s a continuous and collaborative effort starting with the household, the community/neighborhood, and the educational institutions to name a few. As previously mentioned, when bad behavior is being tolerated and rewarded, children would naturally learn and keep doing it without care for the respect, responsibility, accountability, and consequences of their thoughts and deeds. As mentioned in the video, the kids probably don’t understand the gravity of the situation because it’s a joke to them. The adults are another matter and they’re POS for encouraging and praising such acts. My thoughts are most likely naive and difficult to execute. I’m still shaken up that not only are a majority of them kids and teenagers, but that they’d do something horrendous to their own family members. The thought of it is disgusting; it makes me fearful just thinking about being in the shoes of those who experienced it. I wouldn’t blame them for being distrustful of anyone and everyone. I’m praying for justice and the well-being of those who received such injustice. I hope that there will be light, if not lights, in such an awful situation.
