Interesting. I never really thought about it like that.
What do you suggest, then? Like, what practical moves can they take to make this more fair to the artists? Because this technology is not going to go away. You can fight it, but you won't be able to abolish it completely, so what's the compromise?
A good first step on their part would be to make it open-source free for all again. No fees, only donations, so they legally won't be making any money off of you. But as to opting in/out... how? How can that be programmed? The internet is way too vast for that to be achievable. If platforms like Instagram or Facebook put an automatic consent statement on their terms and service page by using their apps, people will just not use the apps anymore, so they have no incentive to do anything like that.
A bunch of artists vs multi-billion dollar businesses? Yeah, good luck with that class action...
