you made some incorrect assumptions here and actually kind of did what AI does, and said something that confidently sounds true without it being true. AI will absolutely say "I don't know" or even claim something is unknowable, or pivot to something it "does know". Calling AI a prediction model is seriously oversimplifying it and it was hardly true in 2022 when it was every skeptic's favorite refrain. It is even less true now. AI absolutely can identify gaps in its knowledge and can go and seek out the answers. It's not being executed that well right now, and the computer power needed is extreme, but AI is not just regurgitating the "most likely" answer. Go ahead and ask any model what your birthday is. It won't make one up. And if that information was accessible to its context window, it would absolutely go find it. I take some comfort in it not being quite ready to replace us yet, but it will absolutely make the demand and value of our professions decline. If even 5% less engineers are needed, that is going to have a devastating impact to the opportunities available, the competition for the remaining opportunities, and thus the salaries offered.
