@33:00 - This was a bit of a "professor moment" where i think mr Hinton grabbed into the _terminology_ more than the meaning.
Chuck, your intuition was exactly on point. It is cascading, and each layer affects the next one, reinforcing or diminishing them. To follow his bird example, when you give it a bird image, in that 'propagation' process, when you reach then "beak" detector you would tell it yup, that was indeed a beak, activate more next time you see that, and so on.
What mr Hinton grabbed on to is the term "Reinforcement Learning" which is a specific thing, still machine/deep learning, but kind of a different process.
