Unemployment is a bad thing in the context of labour-for-income, cyclical consumption and infinite growth.
But, given this trajectory and understanding that **the future cannot be stopped** - why not instead fully embrace this technology and work to redesign society away from growth and towards a post-scarcity, steady-state, open source, collaborative system? A system where automation wouldn't be a threat but an obvious positive feature?
Climate destruction, ecological issues, biodiversity loss, poluttion, war etc. have so far failed in proving beyond doubt the invalidity of monetaryism/growth - we've doubled down on the status quo continually...
AI might be the final nail in the coffin. Finally rendering monetaryism obsolete in a very fundamental way, and on the flipside, provide the ultimate path towards a different system.
I fear however that we are so entrenched and have been for, what - thousands of years? in any case, the transition will be faught against - there will be attempts at using AI to uphold the old system and once again double down on it.
We'll likely get through it at some point, I think that's inevitable. The long-arch view of humanity shows a trend towards democracy, freedom and ultimately being helpful towards each other - indeed, it is in our very nature. Competition is not natural, but an invention that came after agriculture created the conditions for it and we unknowingly fell into empire-vs-empire war for thousands of years afterwards, until only recently we made such things international war crimes.
BUT. One day, we will arrive at a different system and we'll look back at the past millenia with SHEER HORROR at the global system of wage slaves, the profit motive wrecking everything and the myriad psychosocial ill effects and deaths of despair. This period of humanity figuring out technology, slowly and struggling to organize itself sustainably - our infantile era will become a traumatic memory of future humanity. They will read about this in the history books and cry.
Anyway, I'll stop by saying, I wish more people would finally wake up and consider these ideas deeply instead of just narrowly worrying about how it's gonna affect "unemployment" or "profit" or other bullshit partaining to the old system!
