If there is no contract as a work for hire the artist retains the copyright on everything she worked with. This does not include the script but it does include ALL of the material she has draw. Including the Story boards, graphic story... everything she touched. That being said the "director" cant move forward with the project without expecting to compensate the artist if the project makes money. Even if it was fed throw AI, (as of writing AI slop cant be copyrightable the way most media has been as its not "made" by a human person) the artist remain co-author of the work.
If the project ever makes money (doubtful) the artist could sue and probably win a settlement. IF she fills spiteful she can also force a standstill of the project until the director buys her copyright... it has happened with other projects where the producers/editors fucked up (Warhammer, Marvel/DC/Image Comic characters, a bunch of poorly managed kick-starters) but but i doubt its worth it at this point.
