I work in academia, and when I first came across ChatGPT played with it a bit. The thing isn't just that it makes stuff up. It makes stuff up that at first glance can seem plausible. I asked it whether a certain medieval philosophical text was available in translation, and it provided someone who had the perfect credentials and research background to have translated it, and wen asked for a follow up provided reviews of the translation by real scholars in the area, in the actual journals where such a translation would be reviewed. People have been talking about its use for cheating in essays, etc. Obviously anyone who uses the bot for cheating deserves the punishment, but I feel sorry for the stressed students who, upon using, simply have no way of fact checking what it says because it looks so real (and for the same reason am worried about how any essays will be just accepted by markers because the sources look so legit).
