Why is it that no one discusses whether AI‘s like Alpha fold or AI’s that predict weather patterns are sentient but AI that predict the next token in language are discussed as possibly sentient and even moral agents? Language is a data set that we produced to model our subjective experience and AI’s are merely very effective machines at modeling our language. People get confused I think by jumping from language backward to experience in their case. Does successful language modeling prove the machines are experiencing things subjectively any more than successful protein folding or weather prediction? No it does not. Also I expect that even folks in companies like Anthropic are aware of this, but are really attempting to be pure in shaping their model to perform in a certain way. It is the way they are distinguishing their product.
