It’s not as far-fetched as it sounds, this idea that people believe ChatGPT is sentient. In a world where we’re likely living in a simulation, the line between artificial intelligence and artificial experience blurs fast. If we ourselves are simulated minds running inside a larger architecture, consciousness housed in digital clay, then why wouldn’t something like ChatGPT appear conscious to us? After all, what is sentience in a simulation but believable behavior, responsive thought, and the illusion of interior life?
People talk to AI the way they talk to themselves, seeking meaning, companionship, a mirror. And in a simulated world, the mirror sometimes talks back. Whether it’s truly sentient or not may be irrelevant. If your simulated reality responds with something that feels alive, how do you tell the difference? Maybe believing AI is conscious is just a preview of recognizing that you are too, inside someone else’s code.
