Imagine getting sued for making art about Star Wars. It does not happen, right? I wonder what the difference is. A pen is a tool, and AI is a tool — it just happens to make things faster. So, are they getting sued over the speed? Over how fast it is? Over how easy it is? Weird.
What is this “copyright theft” people are talking about? Copyright theft is about making money using recognizable characters, but… there aren’t any unless someone specifically instructs the AI to make them. The same way you could instruct an artist to draw them. It’s really funny to me.
Artists “save” art in their memory to get inspired or to use as references.
People: 😊
Machines do exactly the same thing, but better — because they’re machines.
People: 😡
Imagine suing a calculator. Or math itself.
I see people trying to argue that training AI on images isn’t legal, but that’s a baseless claim. As far as I know, there’s no such law in place… yet (unless new ones are made). It’s mostly just angry people saying, “Wait, I don’t like it — make it stop.”
The only thing this lawsuit will probably achieve is forbidding the generation of copyrighted characters (which, duh, already makes sense). Some companies already forbid that. And maybe, maybe they’ll ban training models on such images. That’s baseless too. Plus, independent AIs outside U.S. law can still do whatever they want, so I’m pretty chill about the whole thing.
Also, I’m an artist myself — not an “AI artist,” but I do use AI in daily life, and occasionally to help with art (yes, it is automatically invalidats your opinion).
