My favorite depiction of this is in the fantasy comedy “feet of clay” by Terry Pratchett, /spoilers/ in the book the role of robot is used to portray the golems, they are described as human shaped tool made to work, golems in the beginning are not capable of being free, they are moved by the words in their head that say ‘you are property,do your job’. Its not until a golems own receipt does it get ownership of itself and this starts the golem “uprising”. Freed golems will work for pay and pool their money to buy other golems and give them to themselves, they reason they are property and that freeing themselves by force would be theft. Thats one of the things i love about terry pratchetts discworld, he doesn’t treat others species like flavors of humanity rather they are separate species with alien viewpoints like how dwarves are incredibly literal minded as living below-ground flowery language can cause accidents, trolls only have one word for vegetation because as creatures made of rock they have nothing to do with it, elves dont believe anyone but themselves have real feelings born from their electromagnetic 6th sense and they do-not experience real time so they cannot grow or change and golems are clay figures with words in their head telling them to do their jobs, they dont need a home or food or entertainment and if no one tells them what to do they are content to just stand there, they will sit at the bottom of the ocean or be buried miles underground just waiting for the next order, golems did not seek out freedom because they had no need for it
