I am an honors student. Never used AI to do my assignments, but I have seen so many classmates who are so much smarter than me use it anyway. Early on, you mentioned that students with higher academic performances likely had such performances due to using AI, but in my experience, people who are alredy excelling academically are using AI. I think it's easier for people who know they'd do well regardless to rationalize using AI as they are confident that they would pass without it but simply don't want to do the work. I also feel stress and external pressures play a role too. I've seen many classmates talk about pressures to succeed from their parents or gaurdians, and I think perhaps knowing that someone, or rather something, else is doing it, maybe even better than you could have, gives them a feeling of security. "Sure, I could do this. But what if I fail? What if I'm still somehow not enough?" I'm sure, subconsciously, stuff like this is flowing through their minds; it is enough to push already smart individuals to doubt themselves, even if they don't notice it, and to instead place there trust in something that they believe is infallible, or at least close to it.
