I'm putting this out there because I've seen firsthand how powerful AI can be for folks like me with dyslexia—when it actually lets us in. I've been messing around with all sorts of AI systems, from coding platforms to chat tools, and the facts are clear: dyslexic people often crush it with these techs. We get real-time help on spelling, grammar, and reading that makes writing a breeze, not a battle. Tools like text-to-speech turn dense text into something we can absorb without the frustration, boosting our learning and even cutting down on anxiety. AI's given me personalized feedback that's helped me spot patterns others miss, and studies show it can transform education for us, like early diagnosis or breaking free from old-school methods that just don't fit. Heck, there are even apps popping up that make math and comprehension way easier, letting our strengths—like big-picture thinking—shine through.
But here's the kicker: These same systems are built in ways that shut us out. I've tried building simple modular stuff, like voice features or memory tools while trying to build an AI assistant, with features for voice interaction, screen analysis, persistent learning, and cognitive support, and bam—flagged for "suspicious" behavior or straight-up blocked. Even basic chats go sideways because the AI misreads my phrasing as "robotic" or unethical. It's not just me; this is a bias baked in, where algorithms trained on neurotypical data see our styles as threats or errors. Research calls it "emergent ableism," and it's real—AI detectors discriminate against dyslexic or autistic patterns, mistaking them for fake content and kicking us out of creative spaces, education, or work. It's exclusion plain and simple, perpetuating historic biases and even intersecting with other discriminations, like race or ethnicity. And yeah, I'm calling it out: Every platform with AI is part of this if they don't fix it. Their guardrails protect the status quo but hold back people like us who could make AI even better.
We deserve systems that understand and empower us, not ones that weaken our skills or amplify stigma. To fix this, platforms should:
Involve neurodivergent users in testing guardrails and detectors.
Create opt-in modes for neurodiverse interaction styles, rather than policing them as “errors.”
Open clearer channels for appeal and explanation when flags or suspensions occur—especially for users with documented accessibility needs.
Audit training data and safety layers for ableist patterns—not just gender, race, or nationality.
If you've dealt with this too, drop your stories here. Let's push for AI that lets dyslexic excellence thrive, not get blocked.
Thanks for hearing me out.
