I've been working as a system integrator for a midsize company with 20k employees. What AI cannot do yet:
- fully understand a huge legacy codebase
- reverse-engineer obscure ERP system APIs and UI screens to collect all the required information
- formulate the right questions to ask to the right people in the company to understand the business requirements
- participate in meetings and email threads with multiple people both in the company and also external partners who supply and maintain the ERP in question
- communicate with proof-of-concept testers and make the right conclusions for improving the integration and fix the bugs
However, AI is good as an eager relentless intern who tries to impress you with snippets of code and comments, and quite often it does it right - so I can just hit Tab and save a few seconds per minute of writing trivial code. The best pair programming approach is when I write a one-liner comment about what and why I intend to do, and then AI generates what I need, and I do a quick review, run the unit tests and continue.
