The first self improving AI would just be a computer virus , duplicate and surviving , more annoying than intelligent.
Well I guess if AI virus start competing with other AI virus for computer resources then they will become more intelligent. Only becomes dangerous when a group of AI virus works together to destroy other AI virus , at that point they will a have a language, they will make more complex digital tools and weapons , and at last go physical.
