when the ai image gen snowball started getting huge and i picked up on it in 2023, i admit, i was excited. i always put off learning how to draw despite admiring the art. but i wanted graphics for my homebrew dnd setting and NPCs. so i partook.
years later, even though i cannot afford to commission art for every detail, i now personally view patronizing those sites even for a hobby as detrimental to what i care about; for my PC in our current campaign, i used BG3 to make an avatar to print screen, instead of using ai. i hope to commission a piece or two of him if he survives the rest of the adventure, even.
my point is, i was enticed by the allure of convenience early on. but seeing how inundated the internet is with ai slop now, it's clear to me that it's a terrible trade for degrading the integrity of our entire culture as a whole.
and a side note: it's ok to automate "mundane" jobs if the labor is promoted to supervise the robots, or if we get a govt subsidized Universal Basic Income that allows for people to eat and pay rent without working the jobs that get displaced. then people can spend time on new skills, perhaps artistic ones, and elevate their living further. but we need to fight for that right, if the path to the future is being paved by greedy oligarchs.
