I've been a Pennsylvania personal injury attorney for thirty years. I have litigated many car wreck cases. I CAN'T WAIT for more "driverless" cars to hit the roads!! They will be like winning the lottery every week for personal injury attorneys! THERE IS NO WAY to write insurance for these cars!! AND, when you sue someone for a car accident, you try to join every other possible defendant you can think of. So with self-driving cars, here's just a small list of possible defendants when one of these vehicles crashes while in "auto drive" mode: the car manufacturer; the outside sensors manufacturer; the internal car computer controller manufacturer; the software producer for EVERY piece of software IN the car AND any software the car was communicating with; the telecommunications network that the car was talking over; any human anywhere that "directly" participated in the functions of the car; and probably a half a dozen more potential defendants that i can't think of right now. EVEN NOW when a "human" operating a vehicle gets into an accident, there still may be additional manufacturers sued like if the brakes failed due to faulty breaks or if a motor controller caused the car to speed up suddenly or a failure in a steering system caused by "an inherently dangerous design." When the self-driving cars arrive, you will be able to DOUBLE the potential number of defendants available.
