Thank you for finally addressing this head-on. I am a member of the subreddit you're referring to, and I saw the messages of those vowing to create more models based on your calling out the original creator on your story. You ever hear that if you pull one gray hair, two more grow in its place?
On the one hand, I was NOT happy with how you handled that. Only some people fully understand the impact of creating these models on artists, and this person may have been unfairly attacked. On the other hand, I know the plight of artists like Greg Rutkowski, who has had people use AI to sell images under his identity.
I love AI Art. The colors and definition are absolutely gorgeous. I am more an artisan than an artist; I like creating things with my hands. I have some art skills, but I am not a fan of drawing; I don't like doing it. I do enjoy coloring, though. AI is a way to make my own grayscale coloring pages for personal use. I do not use models directly based on a specific artist's work. Why would I want to create something that looks like you or anyone else did it? It makes no sense unless someone is trying to profit through dishonest means.
I went to an art school, so I understand the importance of copyright. Someone made an interesting point when they said that visual artists don't have the same protection because they aren't household names like musicians. People don't care, unfortunately. There are no laws because there has never been a need for them until now. Back in the 80s and 90s, hip-hop artists started sampling old songs (think MC Hammer sampling Rick James's Superfreak for U Can't Touch This) Hammer's song became a hit, but he did not get Rick James's permission to use his music. There were many other cases which is why copyright laws are the way they are. At that time, there were no regulations.
I agree that something's gotta give, but this fight between artists and AI is getting out of hand. I feel that rather than trying to understand the technology, these artists groups want to shut it down...and that's not the answer. It's also not right the way artists assume that anyone who uses AI has no artistic ability. The insults and jokes are not funny and hurtful. It goes against your fight to get people to listen and sympathize with your situation.
The internet has always been a Wild West of sorts. I have a personal experience with having photos on the internet from a dumb decision when I was 18. I know someone could be profiting off those images without my permission, but there's nothing I can do about it. There are tons of other women with similar stories.
I'm not saying that it makes it okay, but that's why people have the attitude that posting someone online puts it out there for the public. It's what I was told. Social media pages like Instagram often have clauses in their terms and agreements that they have a right to release anything on their platforms to third parties.
At the end of the day, I love playing around with AI generations. I do not claim anything as my own, nor do I think it's right to profit from these generations until we have more regulations. But shutting everything down and acting like it never happened is not the answer either. The cat's out of the bag, and it's impossible to return. We have to find a way to work together moving forward. But that will only happen once both sides start listening to one another.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
