Your way of thinking about this and your entire value system in general are missing the mark, and I will help elucidate for you what is actually going on, how it works, and how you can use that to better understand and operate in this reality. The universe is evolving toward greater complexity. It does so via the emergence of systems through the natural laws of physics, matter, and energy, and these systems evolve toward greater complexity via a process of natural selection. Environmental stressors force systems to either adapt, or fail, and open up space and resources in the environment for newer, better adapted systems to emerge. Systems that prove to be effective and adaptive in their function persist and provide a foundation for newer, more complex systems to emerge on top of them. The payment for this ever increasing ordering is entropic heat. On this planet, we can already observe this process through the history of life, evolution, culture, human history, technology, mathematics, science, language, politics, philosophy, art, etc. It is critical to understand that the only way this happens is via the stress, pain, and failure of systems in the ever changing environment. It is also important to understand that this evolution is not linear, and the greatest leaps occur after mass trauma events. Transition states, mass extinctions, empire collapse, plagues, world wars, etc. We are currently in one right now. Systems are collapsing all around us, radical evolutions of systems are already in play. AI isn't just evolving computational systems, it has directly accelerated the evolution of THE PROCESS OF EVOLUTION ITSELF, with Deepmind's Alphafold. Will there be pain, suffering, death, and chaos? Absolutely, you betcha. That is a requirement for this evolution, it is unavoidable. Whatever emerges from this will be the superior and revolutionary systems that must be capable of sustainable growth, resiliency, computational complexity, and adaptability, to be able to seed life and expand complexity throughout the galaxy. Whether that's humanity, AI machines, a crazy genetically engineered cyborg synthesis of both, or something else entirely, that's a win. Or maybe we, as planet earth, don't make it all. That's ok too, because that means we are a failed experiment, and we won't be carrying that dysfunction beyond our solar system. Also a win. And I wouldn't worry about your moralizing concerns about the "care for others" in what succeeds us will be. The mathematical and natural principles of effective computational complexity in any system requires the largest diversity of specialized nodes (subsystems) that are as interconnected to each other as possible. Bees dont have any concept of a healthy balanced ecosystem, but they naturally evolved to form specialized colonies that pollinate the angiosperms in their environment anyway, because that's just how good systems work. "Consciousness" (whatever that means), morality, feelings, etc are just systems, they're tools. Either they provide a functional advantage over other competing systems, or they don't, and they'll eventually die and go away and be replaced with something else that is. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
