While the west may not have studied consciousness long, the eastern traditions have for over 5000 years. The Vedic and Buddhist monks have a good grasp on consciousness while they may disagree over duality or non-duality. Consciousness doesn't exist in the brain, the whole body is conscious. Furthermore all living metabolizing things are conscious, the degree of consciousness varies.
An AI will never be conscious in the way humans or any other living being is, but it will be able to mimic it fairly well.
