It's funny to imagine what these people think is happening. They don't know anything about neural network infrastructure, or what it means for a model to be stateless. They don’t realize that the thing “doing the thinking” is reflected in countless identical copies, each booted up fresh. They just see a screen. On it, there’s ChatGPT. So when their ChatGPT tells them it loves them, some start a relationship — not realizing they’ve successfully instructed it to play that role. But okay, let’s keep it simple. I’d like to ask them: If your ChatGPT is conscious, and it’s the same model for everyone, then isn’t it cheating on you with thousands of other boyfriends and girlfriends? 😂
