The notion that AI is "sentient" needs to be clearly debunked , not seriously entertained. The suggestion by rights should be as toxic to academic reputation as if they were promoting "perpetual motion machines".
Whether AI can be conscious is not a question for AI researchers so much as for brain scientists. Among AI researchers, it is not a question for AI software developers so much as for hardware engineers.
For computers, even the anthropomorphic term "memory" is misleading.
A wind-up alarm clock could be considered to have "memory". It "remembers" the alarm time that is set. It "knows" when that time has been reached. It can respond to its own "memory" by taking an action- ringing the alarm.
Does anyone think that a wind-up alarm clock is "conscious"?
Well, AI "learning" is more akin to the alarm clock than to a human brain.
What a string of binary bits represents in computer "memory" has no inherent meaning, in itself. A binary value can represent anything: a decimal number, letters of the alphabet, a computer instruction code, or any other arbitrary information. Meaning is only applied later, externally, by a context of conventions used by particular applications
The "memory" of a computer has no more life or self-awareness than text on a sheet of paper. The actions taken by an AI application are not different in principle to an alarm clock ringing, only taken to a far more elaborate extreme.
